Abstract:  Catchments for all freshwater surface water bodies are required for a number of WFD related projects, including an assessment of diffuse pollution to each waterbody and the assignment of existing monitoring points to water bodies. The nested catchments were created and quality checked by SEPA. Catchments are available for both baseline surface water bodies (rivers with a catchment >= 10 km² & lochs with a surface area >= 0.5 km²) and small water bodies. The catchments overlap in all cases except where a single water body drains directly to the coast and not into a downstream freshwater water body.

Purpose: Catchments for all freshwater surface water bodies are required for a number of WFD related projects, including an assessment of diffuse pollution to each waterbody and the assignment of existing monitoring points to water bodies. The nested catchments were created and quality checked by SEPA. Catchments are available for both baseline surface water bodies (rivers with a catchment greater than or equal to 10 km² & lochs with a surface area greater than or equal to 0.5 km²) and small water bodies. The catchments overlap in all cases except where a single water body drains directly to the coast and not into a downstream freshwater water body.

Lineage:
Lineage statement: Loch water body nested catchments: These were selected from the data produced by the UK Lakes database project where possible or created from scratch. There are 333 baseline loch catchments (for 334 lochs as Loch Lomond is split into 2 waterbodies but has only 1 catchment) and the remainder are for non baseline loch catchments, a total of 553 catchments. River water body nested catchments: These were selected from the nested catchment dataset where available, or otherwise created from scratch. There are 2384 baseline and 788 non-baseline river waterbodies. There are 27 canal waterbodies for which no catchment can be created. In total there are 2357 baseline river catchments (2384 - 27 canals) and 761 non baseline river waterbody catchments, a total of 3172 catchments. 11/8/11 Non-connected multipart features (mainly single cell polygons) allocated to correct catchment. Process involved generating the area of the minimum bounding envelope of each intercatchment, then converting any multipart features to single part and generating their minimum bounding envelope. A comparison of the area of the multipart feature with the maximum area of the corresponding single part feature highlights those intercatchments with distant none connected parts. These were manually allocated to the correct catchment. Each time the generation model is run, portions of catchments are identified as being inaccurately generated by the automated process (i.e. Panorama-based grids) compared to what physically exists. In these cases there is then manual clipping or extending of the model-generated catchments in order to match them to what’s on the ground (DRN, detailed DRN, contours, Terrain 5 etc).
