These are also referred to as estuaries. <statement>The original coastal and transitional water bodies were created in 2003 using the coastline from the OS Panorama dataset which was joined to the 3 nautical mile limit from UKHO. The resulting sea polygons were then subdivided by Tidal Waters staff into coastal and transitional waterbodies. The transitional and coastal waters were identified with the help of typology GIS data. SNH provided information on the location of lagoons which were digitised and incorporated into the dataset.
This dataset was derived from OS Boundary Line High Water, OS Open Map Local and UKHO Open Data 3 nautical mile limit in 2022. Procedures - To re-create the coastal and transitional water bodies from the OS Boundary Line HW (Scotland polygon) dataset, along with the existing coastal and transitional water bodies from SEPA’s website the steps below were followed - 1. Identifying and remove overlapping polygons a. Merge existing coastal &amp; transitional waterbodies. b. Union between the Scotland HW polygon &amp; the merged coastal &amp; transitional waterbodies.
c. Overlaps can be identified using attributes (Scotland HW FID &gt; 0 + Coastal WBs FID &gt; 0) as the area is now land (the Scotland HW polygon is the master dataset), these can be merged back into the Scotland polygon, i.e. the overlapping area is removed from the old coastal &amp; transitional wbs.
2. Identify and Fill the gaps
a. Using Difference toolset identify all gaps between Scotland HW polygon and existing coastal and transitional water bodies (output from 1-c).
b. Multipart to single part to explode the output from the previous step. Delete the big polygon (I.e. land area). Now we are left with individual polygons which are covering the gaps between existing coastal-transitional waterbodies and the up to date HW polygon.
c. Dissolve existing coastal and transitional waterbodies and explode into single part features. Convert the polygons into line features.
d. Convert individual Costal and Transitional polygon to line feature and explode to single part features. e. Select and delete all line features from the exploded coastal-transitional line features that touches the dissolved coastal-transitional line feature.
f. Now extend the remaining line features by 100m from the previous analysis.
g. Using the extended line, split all polygons that fill the gap between existing coastal-transitional waterbodies and the HW polygon (i.e. output from step 2). h. Create a midpoint for each gap polygon and join these midpoints to the nearest existing coastal and transitional polygon to obtain the waterbody attributes.
i. Join these midpoints back to each gap polygon.
j. Now dissolve these gap polygons with the Step 1 – C output based on WB ID.
3. Check a. Check number of polygons in the new dataset against the existing coastal and transitional dataset. If there are any missing, download required polygons from OS Open Map Local and add them to the dataset. Majority of missing polygons were saline lagoons, often very small areas. b. Using topology toolset identify any overlapping polygon within the dataset and fix them.
