Scottish Wetland Inventory
Some of the reasons for developing the wetland inventory are:
1. WFD/WEWS requirements
- regulatory use – risk screening for licensing and planning
- characterisation and classification for WFD (morphology – surface waters, GWDTE)
2. Scottish Biodiversity Strategy (SBS) – knowledge of location and status of wetlands to help determine targets for restoration and management
3. IPCC GHG inventory – knowledge of wetlands and management required, particularly peatlands which are important for carbon storage, sequestration and other GHG emissions
<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>This data set has been developed by assimilating spatial data from different sources (i.e. SNH, RSPB, SWT, FCS and several councils). The whole country has not yet been surveyed, as a result the data set only displays known wetlands. The wetland inventory database comprises a number of fields that include the main WFD95 wetland type, the original habitat survey information and whether the wetland polygon is within a statutory designated site. The wetland typology (WFD95) is used as the main identifying field for each polygon in the inventory database. </SPAN></P><P><SPAN>In addition to the ground surveyed data for the national wetland inventory dataset, wetlands in Dumfries and Galloway were mapped using aerial photographs to identify wetland vegetation types. Following steps have been taken to develop the data set. 1. Carried out correction procedures (i.e. 2 & 3) describe in appendix IV in the ‘Development of a Scottish Wetland Inventory’ documents.
2. Splitting the whole wetland dataset according to different sources.
3. Delete identical polygon based on a. SHAPE of the polygon (select all identical) or
b. SHAPE and WFD95TYPE.
4. Run UNION, DELETE IDENTICAL and DISSOLVE tools on entire data set using model (e.g. Union and Dissolve). 5. Run Erase and Append model on entire dataset.
a. Erase deletes any overlap between polygons of two different source data sets. b. Append i. Input features were appended back to the erase features and the resulting feature useds as the new input to the next Erase features process. This loop was continued until all the source data had run through iterator. 6. Above procedures generates lots of small polygons/slithers. Delete all polygons with an area of less than 4m2.
7. Assign class when WFD95TYPE does not contain any wetland species by cross mapping with - a. NVC 1
b. PH1_HAB
c. When none of the above areavailable use ‘Non-Specific Wetland’.
8. When WFD95TYPE is Still to assign - Refer to [Veg_Commun](8702) - a. Extract NVC1 and NVC2 from vegetationcommunity field.
b. When NVC1 is wetlandclass (4628) use it to populate WFD95TYPE and WFD95SUB in compliance with the lookup table provided by Hans’.
c. When NVC1 is not wetlandclass use NVC2 wetland class (1542) to populate WFD95TYPE and WFD95SUB.
d. Delete the remaining polygons.
