<idPurp>These maps have been produced to meet SEPA’s duty to publish flood hazard maps as set out in the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009. The maps show where there is a risk of flooding from rivers, the sea and surface water.

<statement>The river flood maps are produced by combining results from national two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modelling and detailed local authority studies using a range of methods.
The river model resolution varies between 5m and 20m depending on the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) source and remoteness of the area. The DTM is a composite of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), to which raised flood defences are added, and blockages due to in-channel structures are removed. Flood defence information is taken from the Scottish Flood Defence Asset Database (SFDAD). Surface roughness is based on a land use classification derived from Ordnance Survey (OS) MasterMap, and buildings are represented with a high roughness. River model inflows are taken from the UK Centre of Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH) Flow Grid which has been updated using local gauged data where appropriate. The channel capacity is represented by either filling the channel to the top of the bank in the DTM and routing the calculated floodplain flow through the model, or assuming the channel is well represented in the DTM and routing the full flow through the model. The flood plain flow, has been calculated assuming the channel capacity for all watercourses is equal to the Median Annual Maximum Flow. Inflows are steady-state, and models are run until inflows and outflows converge. A constant mean high water springs (MHWS) level has been assumed at coastal boundaries. The climate change scenario is based on the 67th percentile for changes in flood flow in the UKCP09 high emissions scenario from the study An assessment of the vulnerability of Scotland's river catchments and coasts to the impacts of climate change, UKCEH, 2011.</statement>
